New training simulator is first to accurately replicate boom truck instability

CM Labs Boom Truck Simulator Training Pack

CM Labs Simulations has released its new Boom Truck Simulator Training Pack, claiming it to be the only simulation-based product that accurately replicates machine instability and the ability to deploy outriggers.

The boom truck typically presents an increased likelihood of training incidents, as it is often the first equipment that inexperienced operators are exposed to.

According to the company, its aim is to offer a safer alternative for initial training while mitigating both high fuel costs and the expedited depreciation of equipment that typically result from novice handling.

Acquiring a certifiable skillset

The boom truck simulator can deploy outriggers to level the equipment before operation and simulate the swinging effect of the load.

According to CM Labs, trainees who use the Boom Truck Simulator Training Pack acquire skills including control/function familiarization, outrigger deployment, load handling and pole setting.

Also, a progressive curriculum, developed in consultation with training organizations, can be followed to prepare trainees for CCO & EICA certification exams.

Compatible simulator platforms

The Boom Truck Training Pack runs on the motion-enabled Vortex Edge Max and the fully immersive Vortex Advantage, paired with control levers.

Additionally, it can be run with heavy-duty joystick controls on the desktop Vortex Edge Plus—a compact simulator that runs on the same software powering CM Labs’ fully-immersive simulators, but packs away into easily-transportable carrying cases.

Performance metrics and proprietary algorithms

The Boom Truck Simulator incorporates Smart Training Technology, comprised of CM Labs’ proprietary, patented algorithms. The company claims that this technology ensures accurate behaviour of components within the simulator including cable dynamics, boom deflection, hydraulics systems and engine behaviour.

Also, performance metrics are tracked during training exercises so that trainers can assess safety violations, load control and operational efficiency, among other indicators.

“When it comes to boom truck operations, this simulator is the first solution on the market to successfully close the gap between the classroom and the worksite,” says CM Labs’ Senior Product Marketing Manager, David Clark. “Ultimately, the result is a trained operator who fully understands what is expected on the job, in terms of safety, efficiency, and respect for the machine.”
