Komatsu enters strategic partnership for autonomous equipment 

Komatsu and its subsidiary Earthbrain have entered a strategic partnership with AIM Intelligent Machines, a developer of autonomous operation technology for dozers and hydraulic excavators. 

The partnership aims to develop autonomous construction solutions for the Japanese and United States markets.

“Through this partnership, we will integrate Smart Construction with AIM’s technology to create a seamless connection from construction planning and management to autonomous execution, accelerating the optimization of entire jobsites. By leveraging the strengths of both companies, we will continue contributing to improved safety and productivity, as well as the development of sustainable infrastructure.”

The solution offered through the partnership integrates Komatsu’s Smart Construction-generated plans and target terrain data with AIM’s physical AI platform to enable autonomous operation.

Dozers and hydraulic excavators can understand project objectives, autonomously determine construction methods and travel routes and execute construction tasks independently.

AIM’s technology can be retrofitted to existing dozers and hydraulic excavators, allowing customers to gradually introduce autonomous machines into their current fleet.

“By combining AIM’s physical AI platform with Komatsu’s ecosystem, construction machines can autonomously perform earthmoving tasks at the jobsite. Together, our technologies accelerate the adoption of autonomous operation across enormous construction and infrastructure sectors, helping create safer and more productive jobsites,” said Adam Sadilek, CEO, AIM Intelligent Machines. “This partnership enables organizations to make a smooth transition from conventional operations to autonomous construction while continuing to utilize their existing equipment fleets.”

The three companies have been jointly validating the autonomous construction solution using dozers and hydraulic excavators. The collaboration has now progressed into the commercial deployment phase in the United States market, where Komatsu autonomous machines are already operating at customer jobsites. 

The companies also plan to introduce the solution to Japan beginning in 2027.
