Volvo Construction Equipment’s wheel loaders, excavators, haul trucks and attachments are no stranger to tackling waste and recycling tasks. However, the company has now applied its experience in manufacturing heavy equipment to the development of the LC450H landfill compactor ‑ the company’s first purpose-built landfill compactor for the North American market.
Volvo teamed up with Terra Compactor Wheel Corp., a manufacturer of landfill compaction wheels, cleats, rolling wire guards and machine parts, to develop the LC450H.
“Over the years, our waste and recycling customers have said they’d like us to bring the reliability and productivity that our machines are known for to a purpose-built landfill compactor,” said Mark DeBrosse, product manager of product and segment strategy at Volvo Construction Equipment.
“That’s what we’ve done with the LC450H. Landfill conditions are typically rugged and demanding on machines. We designed the LC450H to withstand the rigours of this type of work, fitting it with durable wear parts, heavy-duty guarding and an efficient powertrain.”
The 40,823 kg landfill compactor is powered by a 416 hp Volvo D13J Tier 4 Final engine. Working in cooperation with the engine and the axle is an HTL310 transmission with lock-up converter, delivering high torque output and ideal fuel efficiency.
Terra wheels are standard on the LC450H, with the option of either two-cleat patterns or three-cleat configurations. For added durability, the cleats are each 21.5 cm tall with hardfacing on the tips to extend wear life.
To improve uptime and wheel performance, the wheels are equipped with:
- Weld-on rolling wire guard to prevent wire from wrapping around the axles and damaging the seals.
- 32 mm-thick wheel wrapper with horizontal and vertical hardfacing on the edges provides for long life.
- 67 cm ground clearance.
- Two striker bars covering both the front and rear wheels to keep material away.
The LC450H may be fitted with a Terra semi-u blade or a straight blade, giving operators the option to pick the blade that best fits their needs.
Comfortable while compacting
The LC450H landfill compactor is designed to deliver a comfortable work environment.
The spacious air-conditioned interior is insulated from noise and vibrations. With a large expanse of glass, the ROPS/FOPS protected cab provides an unobstructed view of the jobsite. Visibility is also improved with the standard rearview camera.

With air quality always an important consideration in landfill applications, the LC450H is equipped with a Respa cab filtration system. The system includes a powered precleaner, filter and pressurizer in one unit, providing high-quality filtration and pressurization.
Comfort Drive Control (CDC) comes standard on the LC450H, allowing the machine’s steering to be controlled by a joystick. The machine’s single lever control with integrated forward/neutral/reverse and first gear kick down gives the operator the choice to control the transmission from his left or right hand.
The landfill compactor has service and maintenance features that are designed to extend uptime. This includes a frame that provides easy access to grouped checkpoints. As well, all major components are easily accessible from ground level or the platform.
