Komatsu is upgrading its XT-5 family of tracked feller bunchers with several performance enhancing features.
The XT430-5, XT445L-5 and XT465L-5 feller bunchers were introduced in 2018, and the new advancements were made based on customer feedback.
Komatsu XT-5 machines allow customers to travel, operate the swing, arm and tool simultaneously, for maximum usability.
To further increase multi-functioning performance for its customers, Komatsu boosted horsepower on the Cummins QSL9 engine to 331 hp, a 7 per cent improvement.
As well, hydraulic flow was increased, while maintaining excellent fuel efficiency. Alongside increased power and torque, the feller bunchers consume up to 5 per cent less fuel.
The machines’ travel speed was also increased by 25 per cent to further improve productivity. The XT445L-5 and XT465L-5 models now reach 5.3 km per hour, while the XT430-5 model can reach up to 5.1 km per hour. Komatsu has also added 13 new LED lights to improve nighttime visibility of the right track and when using the rear camera.
“Working with, listening to, and responding to customers is the cornerstone of our product development process, so when they said that our XT-5 machines would be even better with a boost in speed and multi-functioning performance, we got to work,” said Todd Miyake, vice president of Komatsu America Corporation’s forest division.”

Furthermore, Komatsu increased lift capacities and the ability of the XT465L-5 to readily operate the Quadco 61 cm cutting capacity disc saw head.
The modern forestry cab is positioned on the left, for ample visibility as well as comfort. Operators are also able to customize their controls using the feller buncher’s IQAN-MD4 digital control system.
For serviceability, the XT430-5, XT445L-5 and XT465L-5 tracked feller bunchers’ service points are easily accessible and feature a gull-wing hood for engine access.
As well, Komtrax remote equipment monitoring and management telematics system, which can improve operator productivity and monitor machine health, is available as a tool for scheduling preventative maintenance and service.
